Part 1: Start your project

Prototyping with Fab

This part of the course is an individual work, you can help each other but you cannot work together on the same project or deliver similar work.

You have until to complete and submit your documentation in the Share your project page.

Make your Own Prototype

In this first part you will work on one of 3 objects defined by the makers' labs team to answer to 3 of the 17 objectives of the UN to build a more sustainable future.

Choose one the three following objects, you will then prototype it yourself during the modules of this first part:

Choose your object carefully: once started you cannot change for another subject!

You can't propose other objects than those listed, otherwise we won't evaluate your work.

  1. Balcony Insect Hotel

Insect hotels promote biodiversity by providing shelter and a breeding ground for various species of beneficial insects to control certain plant pests and ensure pollination. (This project responds to Goal 15: To conserve and restore terrestrial ecosystems, ensuring their sustainable use, (...) and halting the loss of biodiversity).

Requirements: It must be small to be easily installed on a balcony or windowsill, it must be able to be hung or suspended in height and must resist to bad weather.
    Maximum dimensions: 200 x 100 x 100 mm
  2. Shower timer

The shower timer is a simple device to encourage us to take shorter showers and thus save the precious resource of water. (This project answers to Goal 6: Ensure access to water and sanitation for all.)

Requirements: it must be easy to use, and must be hangable somewhere in the shower cubicle.
    Maximum dimensions: 200 x 100 x 100 mm
  3. Cutlery case

The cutlery case allows you to carry reusable cutlery to work or school and helps reduce the use of single-use cutlery (This project addresses Goal 12: Establish sustainable consumption and production patterns).

Requirements: it must be strong enough to be carried in a bag with other everyday objects.
    Maximum dimensions: 200 x 100 x 100 mm

Documentation

Documentation is an unavoidable part of any project, which is why we have decided to evaluate your work only on the basis of your documentation.

We have prepared a documentation template on Notion that you will need to complete throughout your project. To duplicate and use this template carefully follow the steps below:

If you haven't created a Notion account yet, refer to the Our tools page.

Make sure you have changed your account from personal to personal pro as indicated in the Our tools page, otherwise you will not be able to upload files larger than 5mb.

  1. Login to your account on Notion
  2. Duplicate the following template: P1 PoC Documentation Template (It may take a little time, be patient!)

  3. Write the introduction to your document: indicate your name as it appears on BrightSpace and the name of object you have chosen.
  4. Complete all pages as you progress through the modules as shown in this example: PoC Cutlery case

Don't forget to take pictures and make screenshots regularly throughout your project!

You cannot delete parts of your documentation but we allow you to add more if you wish.

It is imperative to cite all sources related to your exploration and to credit the images and files added in your documentation.

Project

To help you in the manufacture and design of your prototype you will complete these exercices in the following order:

You must start with the Quick and dirty module and then move on to the drawing one. The order of the 2D and 3D modules will depend on the course session you are attending.

Evaluation

Your work will evaluated on the basis of your documentation of your project.

Each project will be graded from 0 to 20 based on the following criteria:

  • Quick & Dirty : 3 points
Relevance of the proposal and quality of the PoC
  • Drawing : 3 points
    Clarity and accuracy of drawings
  • 2D : 4 points
Quality of design and use of manufacturing tools
  • 3D : 4 points
Quality of design and use of manufacturing tools
  • Documentation : 4 points
Overall quality of the documentation on Notion
  • Participation : 2 points
Time spent on the online course and interaction with resources

If you have already choose your object to prototype and duplicate our template, you can start to prototype in Quick and Dirty mode!
